Is guerrilla movement opposing Putin's regime real?
Two remarkable events happened in Russia. One is an appearance of armed group from Ukraine near the border, and the second is alleged attempt to blow a car of Russia’s notorious millionaire Konstantin Malofeev who has been sponsoring the de-facto Russian occupation of Donbas since 2014. Both events are linked to a young partisan organization – Russian Volunteer Corps. Let’s take a look, is that true that there is a guerilla movement in Russia, and how powerful is it?
What happened in Bryansk Oblast?
On March 2, pro-Kremlin telegram channels claimed that "Ukrainian saboteurs" consisting of 40 people had infiltrated the territory of Bryansk Oblast in Russia, the village of Sushany and the village of Lyubechany (21 kilometers away from each other). The oblast’s governor, Aleksandr Bogomaz, stated that a "subversive group from Ukraine" had opened fire on a car, killing a local resident and injuring an 11-year-old child.
Later, different Russian telegram channels posted that a "Ukrainian sabotage group" allegedly blew up a power substation and a gas station, forcing all the children to evacuate from schools in the area, which soon appeared to be fake (it was even tackled by the Russian state news agency TASS). Throughout the day, propagandists could not agree on whether the enemy group had fired on a school bus or a car with civilians, whether it had taken people hostage or seized a store, and who had been injured. The regional authorities confirmed almost nothing of it. But President Vladimir Putin called the event a “terrorist attack” even though it was still not clear what actually happened.
But the most interesting part is that the operation's commander was Russian citizen Denis Nikitin (real surname - Kapustin) – it was him on one of the video circulating on the internet. He was standing near a paramedic station in Lyubechany with a machine gun, claiming that Russian Volunteer Corps crossed the border with Russia and that their goal was to show Russians that “rebellion is possible; you should fight.”
Denis Nikitin is a well-known Russian white supremacy figure who promotes the ideas of the "white race" in Ukraine and Europe. He was born in Moscow, then had been organizing European MMA events, combat training, and other transnational events, inviting members of right-wing movements from Europe to Ukraine. In 2008, Nikitin created the White Rex brand, which sells clothing with neo-Nazi and white supremacy slogans and symbols.
